Tell Instagram to Stop Allowing the Sale of Live Animals

Despite receiving letters and information from PETA—and even though other leading online companies, such as Amazon, Craigslist, and eBay, have instituted policies against the sale of dogs and cats on their websites—Instagram has refused to institute a ban on the sale of dogs, cats, and other live animals.

Breeders kill shelter dogs' and cats' chances, meaning that for every puppy or kitten who is born to profit a breeder, an animal awaiting adoption at an animal shelter loses his or her chance at finding a home. Approximately 3 to 4 million cats and dogs—many of them healthy, young, and adoptable—must be euthanized in shelters every year because there's nowhere for them to go and no one to take them home. Most dogs sold in pet stores, despite appearances, come from mass-breeding facilities called "puppy mills," where they are denied socialization, exercise, and veterinary care.

Web sales of animals also make it impossible to ensure that vulnerable animals are headed to responsible, loving homes, where they will receive proper veterinary, physical, and social care. Ads tend to appeal to impulse buyers, who do not give serious thought to the lifelong commitment needed to provide the animals they acquire with stability. And any animal subsequently shipped faces a frightening and sometimes fatal journey. Every year, thousands of animals are injured, are traumatized, and even die in airplane cargo holds. And fish, mice, birds, and reptiles die of asphyxiation, dehydration, malnourishment, and disease every single day during ground transport.

Instagram: Please Stop Allowing Live-Animal Sales

Full Petition Text:

I was shocked to hear that Instagram refuses to join other leading online companies, such as Amazon, eBay, and Craigslist, in prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats, and other live animals. For every puppy or kitten bought from a breeder, an animal awaiting adoption in a shelter loses his or her chance at finding a home. With approximately 3 to 4 million cats and dogs--many of them healthy, young, and adoptable--euthanized in shelters every year because there's nowhere for them to go and no one to take them home, there is no excuse for allowing this promotion and sale.

Additionally, Web sales of animals make it impossible to ensure that vulnerable animals are headed to responsible, loving homes, where they will receive proper veterinary, physical, and social care.

Please do the responsible thing and prohibit the sale of live animals on Instagram.
