Instagram: No More Live-Animal Sales!

Every single year, approximately 3 to 4 million dogs and cats lose their lives in animal shelters simply because there aren't enough homes for them all.

Instagram Animals

Breeders kill shelter animals' chances, meaning that for every puppy or kitten who is purchased from a breeder, an animal at a shelter loses his or her chance at finding a loving home.

But these lives appear to mean nothing to Instagram, as the social-media company has refused to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and other animals on its website.

Online sales of animals make it impossible to make sure that vulnerable animals are headed to responsible, loving homes, where they will receive proper veterinary, physical, and social care. Ads tend to appeal to impulse buyers who do not give serious thought to the lifelong commitment needed to provide animals with the stability that they deserve.

Amazon, Craigslist, and eBay have all made the compassionate decision to ban the sale of cats, dogs, and some other live animals online. Instagram should be next!

Instagram: Please Stop Allowing Live-Animal Sales

Dear

I was shocked to hear that Instagram refuses to join other leading online companies, such as Amazon, eBay, and Craigslist, in prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats, and other live animals.

For every puppy or kitten bought from a breeder, an animal awaiting adoption in a shelter loses his or her chance at finding a home. With approximately 3 to 4 million cats and dogs--many of them healthy, young, and adoptable--euthanized in shelters every year because there's nowhere for them to go and no one to take them home, there is no excuse for allowing this promotion and sale.

Additionally, Web sales of animals make it impossible to ensure that vulnerable animals are headed to responsible, loving homes, where they will receive proper veterinary, physical, and social care. Ads tend to appeal to impulse buyers, who do not give serious thought to the lifelong commitment needed to provide the animals they acquire with stability. And any animal subsequently shipped faces a frightening and sometimes fatal journey. Every year, thousands of animals are injured, are traumatized, and even die in airplane cargo holds. And fish, mice, birds, and reptiles die of asphyxiation, dehydration, malnourishment, and disease every single day during ground transport.

Please do the responsible thing and prohibit the sale of live animals on Instagram.
