In January 2014, Las Vegas residents Gloria Lee and Kirk Bills allegedly attempted to set ablaze the Prince and Princess Pet Boutique.
Reportedly, surveillance video captured Lee giving Bills access to the store, where Bills allegedly splashed kerosene onto the puppy cages and set them on fire.
The suspects have been charged with multiple felonies. Thankfully, all 27 puppies were rescued and were miraculously unharmed. Mental-health professionals and top law-enforcement officials consider animal abuse to be a red flag. The American Psychiatric Association identifies cruelty to animals as one of the diagnostic criteria for conduct disorders, and the FBI uses reports of animal abuse in analyzing the threat potential of suspected and known criminals.

Thank you, Mr. Wolfson, for taking the case involving Gloria Lee and Kirk Bills seriously. The link between cruelty to animals and interpersonal violence is well established, and if the allegations are true, the suspects have demonstrated an egregious disregard for the lives and suffering of others and have, in fact, already put the community in danger by setting the pet store on fire. Therefore, if the suspects are convicted, it is important that sentencing recommendations include incarceration as well as psychiatric evaluations at their own expense. Given that repeat crimes are the rule rather than the exception among animal abusers, the defendants, if convicted, should also be banned from contact with animals for as long as possible.
