Elephants Chai and Bamboo Need Your Help Now More Than Ever!

Chai at Woodland Park Zoo
Chai and Bamboo at Woodland Park Zoo

UPDATE: On February 27, Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo announced its intent to send elephants Chai and Bamboo to the Oklahoma City Zoo—which lacks adequate space to hold them and has a history of animal-welfare violations and premature animal deaths—rather than to the accredited sanctuary that stands ready to give them a real home. It's crucial for Chai and Bamboo's well-being that Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and the city council exercise their very clear legal authority to override the zoo's misguided decision. Please take action today!

The Oklahoma City Zoo has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for multiple violations, including putting animals' health, comfort, and well-being at risk by confining them to enclosures that flood. The zoo also received an official warning from the USDA for keeping numerous animals in enclosures that put them at risk of injury. And in 2013, a harbor seal at the zoo died at just 7 years old, even though harbor seals live decades in the wild—and this was just the latest in a string of premature deaths at the zoo.

Please add your name to this petition urging Seattle's mayor and city council stop the transfer of Chai and Bamboo to the Oklahoma City Zoo and insist that they be retired to an accredited sanctuary instead. Afterward, please make a quick call to Mayor Murray at 206-684-4000 and ask him to do the right thing for the elephants.

Please Send the Remaining Elephants to a Sanctuary

Dear Mayor Ed Murray,

In light of the Woodland Park Zoo's announcement that it plans to send Chai and Bamboo to the Oklahoma City Zoo, I am writing to ask you to use your clear legal authority over the disposition of animals kept at the zoo to stop the transfer and ensure that the elephants are sent to a sanctuary. Retiring them to a sanctuary would give them the respite that they deserve after a life of cruel confinement, while sending them to the Oklahoma City Zoo, which has a documented history of animal-welfare violations and premature animal deaths, is likely to put them at risk. Please do what is right for Chai and Bamboo and give them the opportunity to enjoy brighter days and space to roam. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
